They uphold some of the WI traditions, such as learning to make fabulous preserves and yummy cakes (of course) but will also be experimenting with new skills: after all who wouldn’t love to know how to take the perfect portrait photo, or maybe make your own bead necklace?

They’d like to contribute to the community and our planet whilst having fun and welcome anyone who wishes to join them in this.

The group is definitely more about ‘doing’ than ‘viewing’, so go along prepared to join in.

Time: 7:45pm
Where: New Road BN1 1SD
Town: Brighton
Phone: 0844 871 7615

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

Where: New Road BN1 1SD
Town: Brighton

Based on the Oscar-winning film which famously starred Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman and won Oscar’s for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor, Bill Kenwright presents the inaugural Classic Screen to Stage Theatre Company production of Rain Man.

When self-centred salesman Charlie Babbitt discovers that he has a long-lost older brother, Raymond, who has inherited the family multimillion-dollar fortune, he sets out to get ‘his half’. Raymond is an autistic savant, has a remarkable memory and a genius for numbers. Determined to get his hands on the money, Charlie ‘borrows’ Raymond from the institution where he has spent most of his life. As the two brothers embark on a trip across America, Charlie soon discovers that Raymond is worth more than he could have ever imagined.

Mathew Horne (Raymond Babbit) is best known for playing Gavin in the much-loved, double BAFTA-winning comedy series Gavin and Stacey, as well as the BBC series The Catherine Tate Show, and Jack Whitehall’s Bad Education. His most recent West End stage credit was The Miser opposite Griff Rhys Jones and Lee Mack. Ed Speleers (Charlie Babbit) starred as Jimmy Kent in the Golden Globe award-winning series Downton Abbey, his breakthrough came after landing the lead role in the fantasy Blockbuster Eragon, since then he has starred in many films and TV series and has just been announced as joining the cast of Outlander.

Rain Man follows previous acclaimed Bill Kenwright productions of films to the stage such as A Few Good Men, The Shawshank Redemption and Twelve Angry Men.

Seaford Community Cinema is hosting a special event for Seaford's WW1 commemorations in collaboration with Arts@theCrypt. Before the WW1 film Journey's End (12A), Brighton poet Tommy Sissons is to recite Our Children Will Inhabit a Wilderness. The film itself stars Sam Claflin, Paul Bettany and Asa Butterfield and is set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918 as a group of British officers await their fate. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter commented that 'the film serves to illuminate how very different the British Army or any army was then, with its class distinctions and comparatively polite conversational modes, and how differently wars are now fought.'

Following critical acclaim for The Wipers Times, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman have once again taken inspiration from real life events for their new play Trial by Laughter.

William Hone, the forgotten hero of free speech, was a bookseller, publisher and satirist. In 1817, he stood trial for ‘impious blasphemy and seditious libel’. The only crime he had committed was to be funny. Worse than that he was funny by parodying religious texts. And worst of all, he was funny about the despotic government and the libidinous monarchy.

A Watermill Theatre production.

Please note: Tuesday 20 November includes a post-show talk with Ian Hislop and Nick Newman. Admittance will be allowed for anyone who has a valid ticket for any performance of Trial By Laughter.

Beverly and husband Laurence are throwing a party for their newlywed neighbours, Tony and Angela. Joining them is highly strung Susan who’s been banished from the party of her teenage daughter Abigail. Welcome to 1970’s suburbia and its heady mix of free-flowing cocktails, classic disco and cheese and pineapple sticks. As tensions rise and tempers flare the sheen of respectability is torn away by the warring couples with hilarious and potentially disastrous consequences.

Mike Leigh’s iconic Abigail’s Party is one of Britain’s most celebrated comedies; beloved by audiences, it thrills and delights in equal measure. It’s not to be missed.
